How to Cancel Amazon Prime and Get a Refund

Amazon Prime is easy to sign up for during a fast-delivery emergency and just as easy to forget about at renewal time. If you are paying for Prime but rarely using it, here is exactly how to cancel, and how to get some or all of your money back.

Before you cancel: do you want a refund or just to stop renewing?

There are two different actions, and picking the right one saves you money:

• Turn off auto-renew: You keep all Prime benefits until the end of the period you already paid for, then it simply stops. Best if you have used Prime recently.
• End membership now for a refund: Benefits stop immediately, but you may get a full or partial refund. Best if you have not really used Prime since it renewed.

How to cancel Amazon Prime step by step

1. Sign in to Amazon on a browser or the app.
2. Go to Account & Lists then Prime Membership (also called "Prime" or "Memberships").
3. Click Manage Membership then Update, Cancel and More or End Membership.
4. Amazon will show you what you are giving up and, if you qualify, your refund amount.
5. Confirm. Follow the prompts to the end, Amazon often shows two or three "are you sure" screens designed to keep you.

Make sure you reach a final confirmation. If you stop halfway, the cancellation does not happen.

When you can get a refund

Amazon's general approach:

• No benefits used since renewal: usually a full refund of the most recent membership fee.
• Some benefits used: often a partial refund based on the unused portion of your term, or the option to keep Prime until it expires.
• Monthly plans: typically you just stop the next payment rather than getting money back for the current month.

If the automatic screens do not offer the refund you expected, contact Amazon customer service and ask directly. A short, polite message referencing that you have not used benefits is often enough.

After cancelling: check these

• Confirm by email. Amazon sends a cancellation confirmation. Keep it.
• Check for hidden Prime perks you relied on. Prime Video, Prime music, exclusive deals and free delivery all end.
• Watch your next statement to be sure no further Prime charge appears.
• Look for other Amazon subscriptions. Prime is separate from Subscribe and Save, Kindle Unlimited, Audible and Amazon Music Unlimited, which keep charging unless cancelled separately.
